Can green hydrogen become the world’s most sustainable source of energy?
Energy is a vital aspect of modern life and its sources have evolved over time. While the idea of renewable energy is often associated with the sun, wind, and tides, these sources are actually better understood as inexhaustible. The reason behind this is the laws of physics, which state that energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transformed. This means that using an inexhaustible source of energy is a more sustainable and achievable way of living.
However, the challenges associated with using inexhaustible energy sources are many. The technology is not yet mature enough, the efficiency is low, and there are problems with cloud cover and the uncontrollable nature of the wind. Additionally, the cost of inexhaustible energy is a significant barrier to its widespread adoption.
The primary issue with inexhaustible energy is storing it until it is needed. The electricity generated from these sources must be used or stored, and current battery technology is not yet advanced enough to provide an effective solution. This has led to an increased focus on research and development in this area, with many organizations and governments investing in programs that aim to reduce the cost of energy storage.
One such initiative is the Energy Earthshots™ program, launched by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2021. The program comprises three shots, namely the Hydrogen Shot, Long Duration Shot, and Carbon Negative Shot. These shots aim to reduce the cost of generating hydrogen, storing clean energy for 10+ hours, and capturing and storing carbon at a cost of less than $100/net metric ton of CO2-equivalent (CO2e).
In conclusion, the concept of renewable energy is a misnomer and should be understood as inexhaustible energy. While the challenges associated with using these sources are many, the benefits of sustainable and continuous energy generation are significant. With continued research and development in areas such as energy storage, it is possible that inexhaustible energy sources will become a viable alternative to traditional forms of energy in the future.
